Poultry Project at the university of the Gambia Agriculture section in
collaboration with the student association
This project seeks to construct a standard poultry house to serve as a practical learning
facility for the Animal science students at the University of The Gambia. This project will
provide students with hands- on experience in poultry management, entrepreneurship,
disease control, housing systems, and record- keeping. The project will also support small
scale production to generate income for Agriculture and Environmental Science Students
Association (AESSA).
The poultry house will serve as a multi-purpose facility designed to support teaching,
practical sessions, research projects, and innovation in poultry production. This project will
also be a platform for testing local feed formulations, disease management strategies, and
sustainable production practice aligned with national food security.
By implementing this project, UTG will significantly improves its capacity to deliver practical
and experiential agricultural education, foster research output among students, and prepare
graduates with the competencies needed to contribute meaningfully to The Gambia’s
agricultural development and food security.
Introduction: the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience in animal
science education remains a major challenge. At the University of the Gambia, Animal
science students lack consistent access to live animal production systems, especially poultry.
This project will help to address that gap by constructing a poultry house on campus to
provide practical exposure and support student led research.
